the daughter we won't raise

still waits for you

in the hollow of a life never lived

her laughter an echo, dispersed

the day forever fell apart

your hazel-eyed curiosity and

my relentless fervour

mingle in her gaze as she

searches for answers that

the world will never give us

why did the lullabies never

soak into the floorboards?

what did you see

that made you want to leave?

why aren't you coming home?

i startle awake, and it's over

and she'll never exist outside of my grief

how folly of me

to yearn for the ghost of a child

that i will never meet
